Yemen, a country off the beaten tourist track
The globetrotter photographer Gilles Camillieri has visited many countries on every continent.
He has sometimes lived there, giving him the time to take many humanist and documentary photographs.
He discovered Yemen during 3 visits between 1998 and 2000.
At the time, he was living and working on the other side of the Red Sea, in Djibouti. The situation was fairly stable at the time. Travelling through the country from north to south and from west to east presented no major difficulties.
Like many travellers before him, who presented a rather romantic vision, describing a marvellous imaginary country steeped in orientalism, he was fascinated by the ‘happy Arabia’ of historians and poets!
Nevertheless, behind the fantasy, the splendour of the landscapes, towns and villages combined with the hospitality of the inhabitants explains this judgement.
With a series of black and white photographs, Gilles Camillieri aims to share his fascination with Yemen.
